Welcome from the new Chair!

Pramila Smith was elected as KREC's new Chair at the first Executive Committee Meeting held after the AGM in July. Pramila is only the second woman Chair in KREC's 21 year history. She joined KREC in 1994 and has been actively involved, first as Membership Secretary and then as Vice-Chair.

She writes: "My vision for KREC as Chair is to build on the work that has already been achieved, and to promote the positive contributions made by the diverse communities in Kingston. I would also like to be seen as a positive role model for women, especially ethnic minority women, and would like KREC to become involved in raising awareness about the barriers that face these women and to provide information and support to those that challenge discrimination and prejudice."

Community Language School
Euphrates Education Foundation (EEF)

The Euphrates Education Foundation or Al-Furat Arabic School is an educational organisation where we provide a supplementary mother-tongue language, art and culture for the community living in Kingston and its surrounding area.

We usually accept children from the age of 4-16 years and very occasionally beyond these ages. We currently have six teaching levels, ranging from reception class to the higher GCSE class in the Arabic language (which will start from this year - 1997/1998).
The school usually opens every Saturday from 9.30am until 2.30pm, apart from school holidays. The fees are nominal and cost £25.00 per pupil, per term or £70.00 for the whole year.

For further information, please contact Dr M. H. Twaij, Chairman. Tel no: 0208 286 0733, or 0958 284399 (mobile).

Very shortly we hope to provide a meals on wheels service, and anyone interested in this service can contact Valerie on 0208 390 4238, or Sue on 0208 547 6102, or Lally, on the centre number.

Learn English at Home (LEAH)

LEAH is a voluntary scheme which caters for the needs of long term residents from ethnic minorities who are unable to attend "English for Speakers of Other Languages" classes, so that they may learn or improve their command of English.

The aim is to enable the students to cope with daily life in this country. For some, the English is very basic - shopping, attending the doctor etc., for others more advanced.

In practice the majority of students are mothers at home with young children and about 50% are refugees. The rest are from the Indian sub-continent or the Far East and married to English-speaking men.

Tutors are recruited to visit a student once a week for one to two hours. Teaching experience is not necessary as we offer an introductory training course and support. Books and resource material are available. A good understanding of English and an awareness of the student's needs are the main requirements.

By teaching, tutors often find their own horizons broadened, and valuable experience is gained in teaching adults.
